Kyle Busch’s 2009 NASCAR Cup Series season was a lot like his ten Chase races of 2008. A huge disappointment. Sure, he won four races in 2009, but compared to eight race wins in 2008, even the big boss at Joe Gibbs Racing considered it a failure. Singled out as a factor was the highly competent crew chief Steve Addington who was fired from the #18 team.
I had hopes that now that Kyle has accomplished winning the Nationwide Series Championship, maybe the brass at JGR would try to keep Kyle more focused on the top Series. He has proven himself in trucks and Nationwide, maybe it is time to show us he can keep success consistent in the Cup Series all season long. But, alas, with him starting his own Camping World Truck Series team (with two trucks no less) AND committing to running at NASCAR Cup Series weekends, I think we will continue to see him spread too thin.
No doubt, in spite of coming up short for the Chase in ‘09 and his implosion in the ‘08 Chase, Kyle is still a huge asset to your fantasy NASCAR team. He should definitely go in the first round draft along the likes of Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. He is predictably good at specific tracks as well. If he is not your active driver all season long, it is easier to know when to bench him then other drivers.
