Bobby Labonte has hit the twilight of his career and it is something I hate to see. The 2001 NASCAR Champion ran all 36 Sprint Cup races in 2009, albeit for 2 different teams. Neither of them capable of giving Bobby a car that is worthy of a driver of Bobby’s caliber. I appreciate that Bobby didn’t merely ’start and park’ these cars, but soldiered on to complete over 90% of the laps for the season.
Bobby Labonte has inked a deal with TRG Motorsports to race the #71 Taxslayer.com Chevrolet for 2010. Veteran crew chief Doug Randolph will guide the second-year NASCAR team.
Bobby ran 7 races for TRG Motorsports in 2009. If you give them a mulligan on the two races that resulted in a DNF and only count the five races they competed in then Labonte and TRG had an average finish of 22.4. With the surprise finish of 10th at Talladega. I would like to know who (if anyone) is supplying the engines and chassis for TRG in 2010. That would make a huge difference in my attitude towards this teams potential. For your fantasy NASCAR team and whether to select Labonte is all a matter of the games rules. Labonte might be a good ‘low-salary’ driver on a ’salary-cap’ game. He might be the best driver in a group you have to select from. It is all relative to your specific game. It does appear that the #71 will race all season long and that just might be the best assurance you need to make use of Labonte in your particular fantasy NASCAR game.
