Qualifying Was Key Factor to Brad Keselowski's Success in 2011

Brad Keselowski

Brad Keselowski's ability to consistently qualify better during the 2011 NASCAR season was key to his incredible improvement last year. Brad jumped from 25th in driver points in 2010 to 5th in 2011. Historically, Keselowski finishes the race close to where he starts. 2009 average start 23.3 and average finish 21.5. 2010 average start 23.0 and average finish 22.4. 2011 average start 14.4 and average finish 14.8. Brad scored major points in 2011 over 2010 on these better starts on the 1.5-mile+ tracks (which make up 24 of the 36 races). On the 1.5-milers his 2010 average start was 23.9 and average finish was 22.4. In 2011 his average start on the 1.5-milers was 12.9 and average finish was 13.2. On the 2+ mile tracks he went from 2010 average start 20.5 and average finish of 25.3 to 2011 average start of 18.3 and average finish of 16.8.

The big question of can Brad Keselowski repeat his 2011 performance in 2012 may just depend on his qualifying success. (Posted on 02/05/2012 1:31 PM)

Fantasy NASCAR experts agree Carl Edwards 2011 Cup Champion

Carl Edwards

As the fantasy NASCAR experts picks table starts to fill up it is evident that Carl Edwards is the favorite to win the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship. He is currently the unanimous pick to win the race this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. (Posted on 11/15/2011 12:02 PM)

Tony Stewart makes the most laps in combined Phoenix practices

Tony Stewart

Tony Stewart has a good car for the race this Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway. According to championship winning crew chief Andy Petree when a driver makes a lot of practice laps it means his car is real good. May be also another ploy by Stewart to continue to get in Edwards head prior to the race. Stewart ran 54 laps (6th most) in practice #1 and a whopping 91 laps (3rd most) in practice #2 for a total of 145 laps. As reference, Carl Edwards ran 61 laps in practice #1 and 37 laps in practice #2 for a total of 98 laps. (Posted on 11/11/2011 7:35 PM)

Stewart continues to one-up Edwards in first practice at Phoenix

Tony Stewart

Tony Stewart's #14 Chevrolet laid down a faster lap than Carl Edwards in practice #1 at Phoenix International Raceway by over 2 mph. But, more importantly he beat Edwards in the 10-lap average category. The 10-lap average chart only includes drivers who run at least 10 consecutive laps during practice. Tony was on top of the chart with an average lap speed of 135.611 mph. Edwards was second with an average lap speed of 135.436 mph. (Posted on 11/11/2011 3:07 PM)

Practice 1 speeds at Phoenix faster than qualifying record

Array

The Sprint Cup Series has completed practice #1 at Phoenix International Raceway. This is the first race practice since the new pavement and reconfiguration of the track. Jeff Burton put down the fastest lap of practice with a speed of 140.067 mph. Carl Edwards set the fastest qualifying lap ever at Phoenix earlier this year with a speed of 137.279 mph. Look for that record to fall in tomorrow's qualifying session. (Posted on 11/11/2011 2:59 PM)

Casey Mears back on fantasy NASCAR owners radar for Phoenix

Casey Mears

From a fantasy NASCAR perspective I started to get gun shy about running Casey Mears in my low-tier driver group. Weeks 28 (New Hampshire) and 30 (Kansas) he parked 16 and 19 laps in. Then week 31 (Charlotte) he ran 97% of the race before his engine went south on him. Mears is now solidly back on my radar. Weeks 32 (Talladega) he finished 17th and 33 (Martinsville) he finished 12th. (See the car #13 history). Casey finished 18th in the #13 car at the spring Phoenix race and has an average of 21.3 over his last seven races here. On the flat tracks (Martinsville, New Hampshire, Phoenix and Richmond) this season he has finishes of 18th (P), 36th (M), 28th (R), 38th (NH), 17th (R), 42nd (NH) and 12th (M) giving him an average of 31.6. Casey is still a gamble for sure but when racing luck goes their way the Germain Racing team can surprise you with good results. (Posted on 11/09/2011 8:45 AM)

Dust off Denny Hamlin this weekend at Texas

Denny Hamlin

Denny Hamlin had his emotional meltdown about 353 days from today. November 14th, 2010 at Phoenix International he dominated the race, led 190 laps and surely had the win in his grasp almost assuredly guaranteeing himself the Sprint Cup Championship. Then it all went wrong. He had to come in for fuel and finished 12th. Few foresaw the struggles he would have in 2011. Finally, Hamlin is stringing together some consistent finishes. His first string of three were 7th, 8th and 9th (races 24 - 26). Now, Hamlin has strung three more together with finishes of 9th, 8th and 5th these last three. Those finishes are also moving in the right direction! Denny finished 15th at Texas in the spring race. He swept both races in 2010 with wins. He finished 2nd in the fall race of 2009. Hamlin's career average finish at Texas is 9th and his average Loop Data driver rating is 97.8. Both excellent numbers. If you are out of starts for Kenseth and Edwards this weekend you might do well to use one of your (probably) many allocations left of Hamlin. This race could be his again. Jeff Burton could be your extra bullet in the gun at Texas

Jeff Burton

Just how miserable has the 2011 season been for Jeff Burton? Well, it took him 22 races before he got his first top-10. His average finish up to and including that 9th place finish at Watkins Glen was 20.8. The 11 races since then Burton is now averaging 14.5. Over the last five races (a reasonable time to look at momentum) Jeff is averaging 11.6. His last two finishes have been 2nd at Talladega and 6th at Martinsville. Jeff finished 11th at Texas in the spring race and 13th at Atlanta (another fast cookie-cutter like Texas) in September. Since (and including) his win at Texas in 2007 Jeff has an average finish here of 11.4. His median during that time is 9th. It might be fair to say that Jeff Burton has fallen off many fantasy NASCAR players radar this year. With just three races to go in the season a bold move to make that could catch other players off guard is using Jeff this weekend with the hopes of cashing in on his momentum and race history. Marcos Ambrose is viable dark horse pick for Texas Motor Speedway

Marcos Ambrose

Of the ten tracks on the NASCAR schedule that NASCAR designates as intermediate (oval greater than 1 mile, but less than 2 miles) tracks, Texas Motor Speedway is about 3rd for Marcos Ambrose in the success category. He has 6 career races here with 1 (17%) top-10, 3 (50%) top-15 and 4 (67%) top-20. His best finish here is 6th which he earned in the spring race this year. Ambrose was solid all night with an Average Running Position of 7th and running in the top-15 99.7% of the race. Marcos has 1 top-5, 2 top-10's and 3 top-20 finishes at the four intermediate tracks during the Chase. Ambrose has an average finish position at Texas of 18.2 over the last five and 11.6 over the last three. If you are running short of quality drivers in your B- or C-groups (or where ever the Aussie falls in your particular game) then Texas could be a good place to use him. Fantasy NASCAR expert Ryan Rantz external site considers him a viable dark horse pick which in our book is reason enough to include him on our fantasy team. (Posted on 11/01/2011 10:49 AM)

Clint Bowyer represented Chevrolet nicely among the Fords at Texas

Clint Bowyer

Clint Bowyer was the fly-in-the-ointment for the Fords in the spring race at Texas. While Roush Fenway drivers certainly held 80% of the top honors it was Clint Bowyer that ran nose-to-nose with them. Bowyer had the 2nd highest Loop Data Driver Rating of the night with a 123.6. His Average Running Position of 3rd was due to his running 100% of the race in the top-15, an accomplishment only matched by Carl Edwards that night. Clint has been hit-or-miss during the Chase on intermediate tracks (Charlotte 24th, Kansas 7th, Loudon 26th, Chicago 7th) although his momentum over the last five races is a solid 11.8 average finish which includes 1 win, 3 top-10's and 4 top-20's. If RCR gives the soon-to-be-departing driver a capable car this weekend the driver is certainly capable of earning your fantasy NASCAR team good points. (Posted on 11/01/2011 10:25 AM)

Roush Fenway Racing dominated Texas in the spring

Array

It was almost seven long months ago that the NASCAR Cup Series raced at Texas Motor Speedway. In case you've forgotten, Roush Fenway drivers dominated the race that Saturday night. Jack's four Fords earned four of the top-5 Loop Data driver ratings: Kenseth (144.7), Edwards (116.0), Ragan (115.5) and Biffle (111.7). We saw a lot of them on camera as well as they all also held four of the top-5 Average Running Position spots: Kenseth (2nd), Ragan (5th), Edwards (6th), and Biffle (7th). The way that the Fords have run this year on the 1 1/2 milers your fantasy NASCAR line-up should be chock full of Fords. (Posted on 11/01/2011 10:11 AM)

Matt Kenseth is Mr. Consistency at Texas

Matt Kenseth

Except for a couple minor blemishes Matt Kenseth is by far a model of consistently good finishes at Texas Motor Speedway. No matter how you slice it Kenseth's record at Texas points to a strong finish this weekend and many points for his Chase hopes and fantasy NASCAR owners alike. Over his career of 18 races at TMS Kenseth has 2 wins, 9 top-5's, 12 top-10's and 17 top-20's. His career average finish is 9th and his median is 5.5. Matt is not a big lap-leader here (except for his run here this spring where he led 169 of them). (Posted on 11/01/2011 9:58 AM)

Kevin Harvick has best finishes last two Martinsville races

Kevin Harvick

Kevin Harvick is one of two drivers (Kyle Busch is the other) that has finished in the top-5 the last two races at Martinsville Speedway. Harvick won the Spring race and finished 3rd last Fall. Kevin generally has a top-12 starting position at Martinsville and will be looking to start towards the front this weekend as well to gain every advantage possible to close the points gap between him and Carl Edwards. He has completed every lap in every race here since October 2002. He has led laps in 11 of them. Jimmie Johnson is a very safe bet for your fantasy NASCAR team at Martinsville. Kyle Busch has to go to back-up car at Talladega

Kyle Busch

With only 20 minutes left in practice #2 at Talladega Kyle Busch blew out his front right tire completely destroying the front right side his primary car. Kyle only had 12 laps on that set of tires. Speculation is that he ran over something as opposed to a true tire issue. Kyle will be using his back-up car for the race. Denny Hamlin

Denny Hamlin ran 25 laps in the first practice at Talladega and is 24th on the speed chart. Clint Bowyer runs up-front at Talladega with great results

Clint Bowyer

But, over the last four Bowyer takes the prize with an average of 5.5 which is the best of all drivers. Clint's approach to Talladega is of the stay-up-front philosophy as noted in his lap-by-lap charts for the Aaron's 499 external site earlier this year where he finished 2nd and the AMP Energy Juice 500 external site last fall which he won. Weighing the Trevor Bayne option for Charlotte Motor Speedway

Trevor Bayne

Trevor Bayne is driving the #21 tonight in the Bank of America 500 and will be the third driver in the last four years to race the #21 at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Wood brothers. This is their sixth Charlotte race in this span. Fantasy NASCAR players take note it was Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. (and not Trevor Bayne) that piloted the #21 car earlier this year in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte earning an 11th place finish, the second best finish of the year for the #21 and the only other top-15 this season for the 14 races run. The three intermediate track races Trevor has run this year in the #21 (Las Vegas 16th, Texas 18th and Chicagoland 28th) he has an average finish of 20.6 and completed all but 2 laps. Bayne has not raced any Cup Series races at Charlotte but has raced the last three Nationwide races there. May 2010 for Micheal Waltrip Racing he finished 17th. October 2010 for Roush he finished 17th. And, last nights race (October 2011 also for Roush) he finished 3rd. Depending on your game rules Bayne could be a great pick this weekend. Most savvy owners that do their research and realize he is in the race will probably use him. This late in the season could you gain more points by not going with the crowd and picking another driver? (Posted on 10/15/2011 1:19 PM)

Kahne runs fastest and most in first Charlotte practice

Kasey Kahne

The catch-22 with Kahne is consistency through the race but so many laps is a good indicator that Kahne is happy with his car. (Posted on 10/13/2011 4:18 PM)

Joey Logano rebounds at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Joey Logano

The Fall 2010 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway was a turning point for Joey Logano. His 7th place here was followed by 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd place finishes. Logano has raced five points-paying Cup races at Charlotte (3rd, 7th, 13th, 5th and 9th) and has an average finish of 7.4 which is best among all drivers. As word of caution, Joey doesn't come in to this race carrying momentum. His average finish over the last three races is 24th. But, historically Logano has not always come into Charlotte with momentum. His previous three race average (in parentheses) prior to each Charlotte race is:

  • 2011 (24.3 avg) Charlotte #1: 3rd
  • 2010 (10.3 avg) Charlotte #2: 7th
  • 2010 (17.6 avg) Charlotte #1: 13th
  • 2009 (28.0 avg) Charlotte #2: 5th
  • 2009 (12.3 avg) Charlotte #1: 9th

Matt Kenseth set to gain most on Chasers at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Matt Kenseth

Looking at the last two Chase races at Charlotte Motor Speedway Matt Kenseth has scored on average 41-points per race (using NASCAR's new point system). Only Jimmie Johnson has outscored him with 45-points. Kyle Busch averages 40-points during the same two. Next nearest Chasers are Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon each with an average 31.5 points. If numbers hold true (do they ever really?) Kenseth could gain points on the other Chasers but still be separated from Johnson whose averages would put him as the points leader coming out of Charlotte. (Posted on 10/11/2011 8:43 AM)

The only doubt to cast on him continuing this starting pattern is he has not averaged as good a starting position through the 30 races in 2011 as in previous seasons.

  • 2011 (30 race avg start): 13.7
  • 2010 (first 30 race avg start): 8.2

  • There have been 11 races at Kansas Speedway.
  • There have been 8 different pole winners. Jimmie Johnson holds the record for most poles (3) at Kansas.
  • There have been 8 different race winners with Brad Keselowski being the most recent winner. The following drivers each have two wins at Kansas: Greg Biffle, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart.

Keselowski edges out Newman for top B-group driver for Kansas

Brad Keselowski

Using the Statistics Wizard I looked at stats for the last three Kansas Speedway races combined with this year's races at Kentucky Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway. Brad Keselowski just edges out Ryan Newman as your best B-Group option for Yahoo! fantasy racing.

Brad and Ryan's stats for average start, finish, total points earned, running position, and percentage of quality passes are actually near identical. Brad did have 70.04% of his laps running inside the top fifteen versus 47.72% for Ryan. But don't let that sway you too strongly! Brad's average running position was 12th vs. Newman's 15th. Again, nearly identical stats. Newman's 15th just puts him on the bubble.

The real deciding factor may come down to momentum. Over the last five races he has an average finish of 9th and 179 fantasy points earned whereas Newman's averages are 17th and 138, respectively. Finally, Brad won the Kansas race earlier this year.

By the way, keeping with the near identical stats thread, Newman qualified 11th and Keselowski qualified 12th for the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway. (Posted on 10/08/2011 10:36 AM)

Mike Bliss trying to top his 25th place finish from last Dover race

Mike Bliss

Mike Bliss ran 17 laps in first practice achieving the slowest top-speed of all drivers at 149.142 mph. Final practice Bliss ran 67 laps increasing his top-speed to 150.169 mph (+1.027 mph) still only faster then one other driver. #32 car number history shows Mike is 1 of 7 different drivers in Frankie Stoddard's #32 car this year. The #32 is not starting and parking. Mike Bliss raced at Dover earlier this year in the #32 and finished 25th. He practiced in the mid-30's for that race. If they can duplicate what they did earlier in the year Mike could be a good C-, D-group driver option. (Posted on 10/01/2011 12:20 PM)

Should four-time NHMS race winner Jeff Burton be on your fantasy team?

Jeff Burton

Jeff Burton has more Cup Series wins at New Hampshire Motor Speedway than any other driver. Unfortunately, his 2011 NASCAR season has been one to forget. With two top-10 (9th and 2nd) ranking practice results for this weekend's race you might be tempted to use Jeff on your fantasy team. The statistics show this is the seventh time this season Jeff has ranked top-10 in at least two practice sessions before a race. Of those seven races only the race at Auto Club Speedway (22 races ago) translated into a top-15 finish. Jeff only has one top-10 race all season (Watkins Glen). This race at this track with these pre-race numbers do provide Jeff with his best hope this season. But, the odds don't look promising. (Posted on 09/24/2011 11:51 AM)

Ryan Newman gets the pole in one-and-done fashion

Ryan Newman

Ryan Newman was fastest in first practice at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and he did the same in qualifying. After a delay for rain and some track drying the final five drivers to qualify went out for their runs. All session long drivers picked up speed on their second lap. Ryan went out and bested current provisional pole driver, Kasey Kahne's, lap by 0.050 seconds and shut his car down without taking his second lap. Ryan started on the pole for the July race at New Hampshire and won. (Posted on 09/23/2011 5:48 PM)

Juan Pablo Montoya victim of unusual qualifying session at New Hampshire

Juan Montoya

NASCAR and the weather put Juan Pablo Montoya in a bad spot during qualifying. Rain had threatened from the start and finally fell on the track with five drivers left to qualify. It was a catch-22 for sure. NASCAR asked Montoya (the next up to qualify) if he wanted to go out on the track for his two laps. Juan Pablo said he did not. It was too wet. Of course, no one behind him wanted to go out either. If qualifying were cancelled those five drivers would be starting in the first five positions. After a delay and track drying NASCAR made Montoya run his laps. Montoya never felt sure about his grip level and went from 5th fastest in practice to 31st in qualifying. Montoya had the makings of a great 'dark horse' pick too. But, starting so far back at a track where track position is so important I am ready to count Montoya out. (Posted on 09/23/2011 5:41 PM)

Similar track stats key for NASCAR fantasy success at New Hampshire

Array

New Hampshire is a 'flat banked' type of track. Similar tracks would be Richmond, Phoenix, and Martinsville. Scoring maximum fantasy points on these tracks requires a driver with great car control and of course a well setup and handling car. You need to score well on the 'flat banked' tracks with your fantasy team during the Chase. This is because 30% of the races in the Chase are on 'flat banked' tracks-- more than any other track type. While Martinsville is a 'flat banked' track, I would not include Martinsville history in my research for this race. Instead, look at the last three races at New Hampshire along with the Richmond and Phoenix races from this year. Use the Statistics Wizard to select your races and metrics you value most. Stats such as Percent Running in Top-15, Avg. Running Position, Percent of Quality Passes, and Total Points should aid in setting your roster. (Posted on 09/21/2011 8:44 PM)

That includes a 2nd place finish there in July while teammate Ryan Newman took the checkers.
