Tony Stewart makes the most laps in combined Phoenix practices

Phoenix International Raceway

Tony Stewart has a good car for the race this Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway. According to championship winning crew chief Andy Petree when a driver makes a lot of practice laps it means his car is real good. May be also another ploy by Stewart to continue to get in Edwards head prior to the race. Stewart ran 54 laps (6th most) in practice #1 and a whopping 91 laps (3rd most) in practice #2 for a total of 145 laps. As reference, Carl Edwards ran 61 laps in practice #1 and 37 laps in practice #2 for a total of 98 laps.

Stewart continues to one-up Edwards in first practice at Phoenix

Phoenix International Raceway

Tony Stewart's #14 Chevrolet laid down a faster lap than Carl Edwards in practice #1 at Phoenix International Raceway by over 2 mph. But, more importantly he beat Edwards in the 10-lap average category. The 10-lap average chart only includes drivers who run at least 10 consecutive laps during practice. Tony was on top of the chart with an average lap speed of 135.611 mph. Edwards was second with an average lap speed of 135.436 mph.

Practice 1 speeds at Phoenix faster than qualifying record

Phoenix International Raceway

The Sprint Cup Series has completed practice #1 at Phoenix International Raceway. This is the first race practice since the new pavement and reconfiguration of the track. Jeff Burton put down the fastest lap of practice with a speed of 140.067 mph. Carl Edwards set the fastest qualifying lap ever at Phoenix earlier this year with a speed of 137.279 mph. Look for that record to fall in tomorrow's qualifying session.

Casey Mears back on fantasy NASCAR owners radar for Phoenix

Phoenix International Raceway

From a fantasy NASCAR perspective I started to get gun shy about running Casey Mears in my low-tier driver group. Weeks 28 (New Hampshire) and 30 (Kansas) he parked 16 and 19 laps in. Then week 31 (Charlotte) he ran 97% of the race before his engine went south on him. Mears is now solidly back on my radar. Weeks 32 (Talladega) he finished 17th and 33 (Martinsville) he finished 12th. (See the car #13 history). Casey finished 18th in the #13 car at the spring Phoenix race and has an average of 21.3 over his last seven races here. On the flat tracks (Martinsville, New Hampshire, Phoenix and Richmond) this season he has finishes of 18th (P), 36th (M), 28th (R), 38th (NH), 17th (R), 42nd (NH) and 12th (M) giving him an average of 31.6. Casey is still a gamble for sure but when racing luck goes their way the Germain Racing team can surprise you with good results.
