Juan Pablo Montoya crashes car in first practice at Las Vegas
Juan Pablo Montoya wrecked his car in a fairly mild looking wall scrape on the first lap of first practice for the Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The team worked on getting the backup car ready for the next hour and twenty minutes before Juan got out for five more laps of practice during the last 10 minutes. With qualifying for the Cup Series next Montoya didn't have much time to feel the car out. Luckily there are two more practices scheduled yet before the race.

Juan Pablo Montoya victim of unusual qualifying session at New Hampshire
NASCAR and the weather put Juan Pablo Montoya in a bad spot during qualifying. Rain had threatened from the start and finally fell on the track with five drivers left to qualify. It was a catch-22 for sure. NASCAR asked Montoya (the next up to qualify) if he wanted to go out on the track for his two laps. Juan Pablo said he did not. It was too wet. Of course, no one behind him wanted to go out either. If qualifying were cancelled those five drivers would be starting in the first five positions. After a delay and track drying NASCAR made Montoya run his laps. Montoya never felt sure about his grip level and went from 5th fastest in practice to 31st in qualifying. Montoya had the makings of a great 'dark horse' pick too. But, starting so far back at a track where track position is so important I am ready to count Montoya out.
