Can Bayne Do a Repeat?
Congratulations to Kurt Busch on getting the first road-course victory of his career after coming close quite a few times before. This time he stayed out in front at Infineon Raceway and away from all of the intentional wrecks on the course.
This week the series heads from the road-course in California to the third restrictor plate race of the season at Daytona International Speedway. Trevor Bayne shocked the NASCAR world in February by winning the Daytona 500. After missing seven races with an illness and sponsorship problems for the Wood Brothers #21. Trevor returned to the track at Michigan just over a week ago and finished 16th. Can he come back to Daytona and win again?
Coke Zero 400
Clint Bowyer: Clint is my pick to win the race at Daytona this weekend. Clint won the Amp Energy Juice 500 at Talladega last year and has been in contention at both restrictor plate races this year. When he hooks up with one of his teammates they just fly to the front of the pack.
Jeff Gordon: I look for Jeff to team up with Trevor Bayne once again this weekend like they did at Daytona in February. Trevor was the best pusher on the track that entire weekend and Jeff was the driver that trusted him the most and it could get him a victory this weekend.
Jeff Burton: Jeff did the best pushing for Clint Bowyer in both of the previous restrictor plate races this season and if he winds up being the pushee late in the race he could very well get the win.
Kevin Harvick: Another of the Richard Childress drivers, Kevin could get hooked up with a teammate or another driver and have a shot to win this race. It all comes down to timing at the end of these races and Kevin always seems to have his timing right.
Carl Edwards: The Roush/Fenway cars seem to have the most power on the track this year and it has really helped at Daytona and Talladega. The Roush drivers seem to like to hang back for most of the race but they can get to the front in a hurry when the race is winding down.
Greg Biffle: Greg will try to be the driver that gets hooked up with teammate, Carl Edwards, on Saturday night. It seems that when these two get hooked up they move to the front without a problem and that can lead to victory for either of them.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Dale had a rough weekend at Sonoma last week but he has been coming on as of late and we all know he loves the restrictor plate races. I look for him to team up with either Jimmie Johnson or Tony Stewart this weekend.
Kyle Busch: The Joe Gibbs teams always seem to have something at Daytona. You really never know who they are going to pick as a drafting partner. It seems like they don’t like drafting with teammates if they don’t have to. If the car is good, there is no doubt someone will help you out.
Kurt Busch: Kurt is on a roll right now after having a lot of dissension on his team only 6 weeks ago. Both he and Brad Keselowski should have good cars at Daytona and if they can hook up they will find themselves battling for a win once again.
Jimmie Johnson: Jimmie came from nowhere at the end of the Talladega race to win by the smallest of margins. Jimmie is one to hang back through the entire race and then make his move when the timing is right.

I agree, Bowyer should do well and may possibly win, but a little better fact checking next time, please… 10/31/2010 – Clint Bowyer wins the Amp Energy Juice 500 at Talladega, which I do believe ia a plate track.
Howdy Jeff, You don’t think Jimmy Johnson will make the top 5?
Thanks for pointing that out for me Mike. Sorry I didn’t check my facts or remember that one. Makes me feel even better about my pick now : )
Regarding Jimmie Johnson and a top 5 finish. This is a restrictor plate track and it is so hard to pick a top 5. Anyone can win one of these races by avoiding the “big one” and being in the right place at the right time ala Trevor Bayne at Daytona. Just a crap shoot in my opinion.
Good catch Mike. I missed that too. Post updated.
Howdy Jeff, Boy do you have that right (Jimmy Johnson). I think this is one of the hardest races (Also Talladaga)to score. Normally I would pick a top driver that is down in the starting line up, and get points for working his way up to the front. I have to go out of state with no internet access this weekend and won’t be home when qualifing is done, to make my picks. So I have to make my picks Thursday. There is no clear front runner, so I’ll have to use luck with some help from you guys. I feel I have a better chance picking the top 10 but not the top 5. Have a great 4th of July, God bless America.
6 of my teams are on NASCAR.com. Thank you for letting me know about the cut off time on Yahoo Racing.
Like I said this race is a crap shoot and qualifying nor practice means a lot this weekend. I’m not saying that some drivers don’t have better equipment or the know how to get to the front but, when everyone is going around 200 mph things can happen in the blink of an eye. Just make your best judgement before qualifying and stick with those drivers.
Thanks Jeff
